The Heiltsuk Integrated Resource Management Department is the stewardship arm of the Heiltsuk Nation. Our responsibility is to plan for and manage the natural and cultural resources of our Traditional Territory consistent with Heiltsuk culture and values.
HIRMD works to promote:
  • Healthy and resilient ecosystems;
  • Sustainable economies;
  • Reduced user conflicts in our territory;
  • Heiltsuk jurisdiction over our lands, waters and resources;
  • Protection of Heiltsuk values, culture and heritage.

Vision Statement

For generations, Heiltsuk ancestors acted as stewards over our waters, land and resources respecting all life it sustains.  Our vision and approach remains unchanged.  We uphold the principles of eco-based management as a foundation for our conservation-based economy.

History

HIRMD was established in January 2010 as a new and integrated approach to natural resource management for the Heiltsuk Nation.  As a department, HIRMD would be responsible for managing the stewardship of Heiltsuk Territory and its resources and be accountable to a separate Board of Directors comprised of Heiltsuk community members.
