The Forestry Department is responsible for promoting forest management policies, strategies and planning and practices to ensure sustainable use of Heiltsuk forests and protection of key cultural and environmental values in Heiltsuk Territory.
The guiding principles for forest management are to:
1. Ensure conservation of natural and cultural resources
2. Ensure Heiltsuk priority access to resources for cultural and sustenance use
3. Enable appropriate Heiltsuk commercial and recreational use of resources
4. Enable the appropriate non-Heiltsuk commercial and recreational use of resources.
