During the low-low tides in early June 2016, a group of researchers and community members were in Hauyat collecting photographs and data for the Hauyat History Project. This project, which is a collaboration between people at HIRMD, SFU, Hakai Institute, and UVic, brings together memories, oral histories, and western scientific data to tell the deep history of Hauayt. These pictures capture a bit of the beauty and magic of Hauyat. Many thanks to all who have shared their memories and knowledge about Hauyat. Hauyat History Project Photo Galleries
Check out these four amazing photos of some of the Heiltsuk ancestors fishing near Hauyat around 1917! They were taken by Sam Johnson, a photographer who worked out of Bella Bella at the time. These photos are part of a large collection of images from an Icelandic settlement on Northern Hunter Island in the early 1900’s. The whole collection has been documented and restored by Robert Asgeirsson, a retired director of cinematography, and curator of the Icelandic Archives of BC (IABC). We learned of the collection from a lead from Larry Jorgenson. Thanks to both Larry and Robert. We will be going through the collections for other images of the landscape and people of Hauyat to give us more clues about the history of this amazing place.
NOTE: These restored images are not meant to be printed. They are for scholarly research purposes only via computer screens.
Higher resolution "Gallery" quality prints can be supplied by the IABC at reasonable cost. Please call 604-200-5700.
