TENKEEAH SALMON ENHANCEMENT PROJECT
The Heiltsuk Nation, under the direction of the HIRMD Aquatics Department, has been monitoring and managing the sockeye salmon stocks of the Tankeeah River System since 2003. The purpose of the Tankeeah Salmon Enhancement Project is to increase the sockeye population to ensure that the Heiltsuk have access to an important food source. Find out more!
This Project began in 2011, as a partnership between Heiltsuk knowledge holders and university researchers. It was inspired in part by the rich documentary history in fur trader journals, oral traditions recorded by anthropologists and the many ancient archaeological sites on north Hunter Island. More inspiring is the living history held in the fond and vivid memories of descendants of the families who had smoke houses at Hauyat in the 1950’s and earlier. Find out more!
